Have you ever felt unappreciated or disrespected at work?
I have and I remember one instance vividly.
It was 2008 and the economy was falling apart.
My VP and manager wanted to meet with me because the lease was up for my branch.
The plan was to consolidate my branch with another and I was to go work for one of my peers.
This was hard for me to swallow since I had taken my branch from the worst to the top in <1 year.
So my VP and manager wanted to meet with me.
For the first half, the VP told me how impressed she was with me from being no. 1 every month as a rep, to turning the team around, to producing the top rep every month, etc.
I then shared my frustrations and my point of view of it feeling like a demotion to have to go work for a peer of mine that I was outperforming.
The VP’s tone changed.
“Marcus, if you don’t like it, YOU CAN QUIT!”-VP said annoyed.
My jaw dropped and I looked at my boss.
His face went pale too.
She continued to berate me like a child for the next 5 minutes.
The meeting ended.
I took the job and continue to have success for years after until I left in 2011.
I learned from that situation though.
No matter your role, treat people how they want to be treated.
And you can learn from bad leaders too.
Do you agree?
