I didn’t start speaking until I was 4 years old.
When I did start speaking, I had a major speech impediment.
I slurred my words.
Couldn’t communicate properly.
I was incredibly insecure and lacked confidence speaking.
When I turned 7, I had to go to speech therapy classes.
I had to leave class to go to a “special class” everyday.
It was incredibly embarrassing.
And I was made fun of by the other kids.
The speech therapist was awesome though.
She taught me how to speak.
How to communicate.
How to share ideas.
She had me practice speaking by reading books out loud.
She taught me step-by-step.
Outside of that class, I continued to work on my speaking skills.
I started devouring 8-10 young adults books EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK.
I’d practice reading out loud and working on my pronunciation.
Fast forward, one year later and I was able to stop going to the special classes.
My reading level skyrocketed to a 9th grade level in that year and I got better at speaking.
I was 8 years old.
If it wasn’t for that speech therapist, I would have never learned those skills.
It’s amazing how your life can change if you have the right teacher!
